the vertical roller mill was selected for its ability to handle the high moisture content of the raw material which can exceed 10 percent due to the regions extreme rainfall which averages over 10 meters per year in some areas. the mill uses hot gases from a coal-fired furnace to dry the limestone during grinding reducing the moisture to below 1 percent in a single operation. the target fineness is 90 microns approximately 170 mesh which is ideal for cement production and for industrial applications.
 
the primary application of this limestone powder is in the production of portland cement at a integrated cement plant located adjacent to the grinding mill. the fine powder is also sold to local industries including paper manufacturers in guwahati and paint companies in kolkata. the 30 tons per hour capacity makes this one of the largest limestone grinding operations in eastern india capable of supplying both the captive cement plant and external customers with consistent high-quality material.

 
the project faced unprecedented challenges in logistics and construction due to the extreme rainfall and mountainous terrain of meghalaya. the solution was to build the plant on a series of elevated terraces with extensive drainage systems and to schedule all major construction activities during the brief dry season from december to february. the mill itself was designed with weatherproof enclosures and covered material handling systems throughout to protect the product from the relentless monsoon rains. despite these challenges the project was completed on schedule and now stands as a testament to what can be achieved with careful planning and engineering in even the most demanding environments.
