the taif marble waste recycling project saudi arabia

in the mountainous region near taif in western saudi arabia a unique environmental project is turning industrial waste into valuable raw materials. this is the taif marble waste recycling project which utilizes a stone powder grinding mill to process waste slurry and off-cuts from local marble and granite fabrication shops. for years these marble offcuts and the fine slurry from cutting operations were dumped in landfills creating environmental hazards and wasting a valuable resource. this project features a high-pressure suspension grinding mill with a capacity of 4 tons per hour specifically designed to handle the tough abrasive nature of marble waste.

the raw material consists of dry marble chips and crushed slabs which are fed into the mill and ground to a fine powder with a target fineness of 74 microns or 200 mesh. this off-white powder has multiple applications. the highest quality material is sold to local paint manufacturers who use it as an extender and filler in water-based emulsion paints providing bulk and improving the paints application properties.

The lower grades are supplied to construction material companies for use in producing ready-mixed plaster and tile adhesives for the building boom in cities like mecca and jeddah. the project faced the technical challenge of feeding material with inconsistent moisture content as the marble slurry had to be thoroughly dried before grinding. the solution was to install a rotary dryer upstream of the grinding mill using waste heat from a local generator to pre-dry the material efficiently.

The 4 tons per hour capacity of this stone powder grinding mill may seem modest but it represents a significant environmental victory diverting thousands of tons of marble waste from landfills each year and providing local industries with a cost-effective domestically produced raw material. this project serves as a model for industrial symbiosis across the kingdom.
